Johnny C. Bennett, 69, of Valdosta, passed away on Friday, February 24, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on September 16, 1953, in Valdosta, to the late Colis Levy Bennett and Selma Mae Clark Bennett. Mr. Bennett graduated from Valdosta High School in the early 1970’s, after high school he worked for the family business installing flooring. He soon went to work at Bayliner as a supervisor for over 10 years. Mr. Bennett went back to school at Valdosta State University to become a teacher, and he taught school and coached baseball for Valdosta City Schools for nearly 20 years before retirement. After retirement he couldn’t sit still and went back to work at Astro Exterminating for several years. Mr. Bennett loved and was devoted to his family; he would do anything and build anything for his grandchildren. He loved his students, had a wonderful sense of humor, and enjoyed playing cards. Mr. Bennett sought to love and serve everyone he came in contact with. He loved the Valdosta Wildcats, the Atlanta Braves, the VSU Blazers, and NASCAR. Mr. Bennett was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife of 41 years, Paula Bennett, of Valdosta; son, Josh Bennett, of Savannah; son and daughter-in- law, John Charles and Carly Bennett, of Atlanta; son and daughter-in-law, Austin and Erika Bennett, of Valdosta; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Ann and Johnathan Chadwick, of Marietta; his grandchildren, Kayla Chesser, Layla Parker, Bridges Bennett, Brody Bennett, and Easton Bennett; his great grandchildren, Lawson Chesser, Layton Chesser, and Landon Chesser; sister, Joe Ann Jenkins, of Valdosta; sister, Joyce Berry, of Lancaster, OH; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Billie Bennett, of Valdosta; sister, June Cooke, of Valdosta; sister-in-law, Ann Bennett, of Valdosta; and mother-in-law, Margaret Lightsey, of Valdosta. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Jack Bennett and Jerry Bennett.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Reverend Garrett Grubbs officiating. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5-7pm.
