JOHN WILLIAM (BILL) SIMPSON, JR., 84, of Valdosta, passed away Friday, January 15, 2010, at his home with his family by his side. He was born February 22, 1925 in Tunnelton, W.V., a son of the late John William and Pearl Anderson Simpson. He was a graduate of Preston County High School, Tunnelton, WV. He served in the United States Navy for three years and was an UBoat driver in the invasion of Normandy.
He moved to Valdosta in 1954 and worked as a mechanic for the Lowndes County bus shop for years before becoming self-employed and retiring in 1988.Mr. Simpson was a member of the New Harvest United Methodist Church and enjoyed baseball, fishing and vegetable gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Verlie Simpson; five children, Pam and husband Thaxton Sale of Lake Park, Paul Simpson, John Simpson III, Mary (Kay) Simpson, and Mark Simpson, all of Valdosta; ten grandchildren, Graham and Jessica Sale of Valdosta, Michael and Andi Sale of Valdosta, Adam Simpson of Valdosta, Jennifer and Chris Bozeman of Moultrie, John Simpson IV of Tallahassee, FL, James Selph of Buffalo, NY, Shaun Simpson of Valdosta, Catherine Temples and Megan Temples of Valdosta, and Tiffany Paige Ortlieb of Valdosta; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Ray Sloane of Chicago, IL, Janet and Millard Weaver of Tunnelton, W.V., and Nadine and Jack Boyd of AL; two sisters-in-law, Cleo Simpson and Oppie Hooker; numerous nieces and nephews; and dozens of friends. He was predeceased by a grandson, William Ashley Sale, and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services for Bill Simpson, Jr. will be held at one p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2010 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Houser officiating. Burial will follow in the Lake Park city cemetery with military honors.
