John W. Selph, 84, of Valdosta, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at home with his family after a period of declining health. He was born on August 18, 1921 in Dodge County, GA and lived most of his life in Valdosta. His parents were the late Harlow W. and Georgia Bell McCranie Selph. Mr. Selph was retired from Atlanta Gas Light Company, was a World War II Army Veteran who served in the 78th Lightning Division receiving a purple heart, a bronze star and three battle stars and served in the European Theater. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie Cooper Selph, three sons and two daughters in law, Don and Twyla Selph, Phillip and Sylvia Selph and David Selph all of Valdosta, four granddaughters, Donya Coggins (Anthony), Lisa Guest (Chris), Mendy Darby (Kirk) and Misty Selph, four great grandchildren, Lindsay Dees, Christian Guest, Zachary Darby and Perry Coggins, one sister, Lavan King and one sister in law, Mary Bennett, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 12, 2006 at two p. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Reverend Rick Stevens and Reverend Bob Willis officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from six until eight p. m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
