John T. Courson, 89, of Valdosta died Friday, November 14, 2008 at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Hahira on July 25, 1919 to the late Henry Manning and Lula Shierling Courson and was a lifelong resident of this area. Mr. Courson was a retried District Manager for Costal States Life Insurance Company and a member of the Northside Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II fighting in the Pacific Theatre and was a member of St. John the Baptist Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of fifty four years, Helen R. Courson, one daughter, Janice C. Hagin, two sons and daughters in law, John Anthony and Ellen Courson, H. Byron and Katharine Courson, six grandchildren, John Taylor Courson, William Eanes Courson, Jillian Rebecca Courson, Seth Anthony Courson, Kelly Elizabeth Hagin and Katharine McRee Courson all of Valdosta, one sister, Treva Vickers of Hahira and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Sunday, November 16, 2008 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Willis officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Cemetery in Hahira. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
