John R. Wiggins, 84, of Valdosta, went to be with his Lord on December 26, 2011 after a short illness. He was born in Atlanta on January 11, 1927 and was the son of the late John Robert Wiggins, Sr. and Edith Mathis Wiggins Mixson. As a young boy John moved to Valdosta where his grandfather's family had established Mathis and Youmans Music Company in 1907. He graduated from Valdosta High School and then attended Georgia Tech before he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his service in the Navy John continued his education at Emory, graduating in 1949. He worked for several years for the family business. Mr. Wiggins then became a New York Life Insurance Company representative for the next 37 years. He was a Charter member and Deacon of Perimeter Road Baptist Church. He was also a former member and Deacon of First Baptist Church. He was a dedicated Sunday School teacher to young boys and later young married couples, developing many friendships with his students who kept in touch with him through the years. He was active with the Valdosta Lowndes Chamber of Commerce, was a past President of Life Underwriters, and had served on the board of the South Georgia Medical Center Foundation and First Federal Savings and Loan. He was married in 1950 to his greatest joy in life, Jacqueline Norton from Boston, Georgia. John's time spent with his children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren was what he enjoyed most .
Survivors include his wife, Jackie Wiggins of Valdosta; a son and daughter in law, Bob & Penny Wiggins of Cartersville; a daughter and son in law, Kay & Richie Adham of Orlando, FL. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and their spouses, Patrick & Jennifer Wiggins of Suwanee, Brian & Angie Wiggins of Acworth, Stuart & Melissa Wiggins of Cartersville, Ashley & Adam Baker of Cartersville, Brooke & Stephen Cox of Braselton, Michael & Sarah Adham of Atlanta, and Katherine Adham of Gainesville, and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Wiggins will be held at Perimeter Road Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2011. Reverend Brian Anderson, Reverend Wayne Dorsett and Reverend Craig Bailey will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 5 -7 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in memory of Mr. Wiggins to Perimeter Road Baptist Church or to the Mailbox Club.
