John M. Mcelwain

John M. McElwain, 86, of Valdosta, died on Monday, November 16, 2020 at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born on November 2, 1934 in Jennings, Florida to the late Jesse and Minnie Herring McElwain. He eventually moved from Jennings to Valdosta when he began working with the Valdosta Drug Company and made Valdosta his home. He was also employed with United Van Lines for a time and finally retired from Roadway. Mr. McElwain was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty McElwain of Valdosta; a son, Patrick McElwain of Valdosta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and David Slankard of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Cathy and Jerry Fletcher of Bonita Springs, Florida; grandchildren, Stephanie Slakard of St. Petersburg, Florida, John Robert Slankard of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Alan and Rachel Mapp of Lake City, Florida; one great-grandchild, Aria Mapp of Lake City, Florida. He was preceded in death by his son, John Monroe McElwain, Jr.
A family memorial service will be held at a later date and time with the committal of cremated remains to take place in the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.
