John (J.C.) Calvin Sheffield, Jr.

October 28, 1931 — May 18, 2013

John Calvin (J.C.) Sheffield, Jr., 81, of Valdosta, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the Langdale Hospice House after a short illness.

He was born October 28, 1931 in Howell, a son of the late John C. Sheffield, Sr. and Elsie Daugharty Sheffield. He grew up in Fargo and later moved to Valdosta where he attended Valdosta High School. After graduating high school he was drafted into the United States Air Force, where he served two years in Okinawa, Japan, as well as stateside in Delaware, California and Texas. J.C. was in the logistics division, working in supply during the Korean War. Following his service to our country he began his employment with Southern Railroad, during which time he attended and graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management. He continued to work for Southern Railroad as a switch car operator. After retiring he moved back to Valdosta, from Macon, to assist in taking care of his mother, during which time he became interested in real estate, owning and managing properties.

He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church, and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. J.C. lived with passion and heart, he showed others that he was honest and trustworthy. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, hunting, walking and reading

He is survived by his daughter, Jennie Carol Reece of Fort Collins, CO; four grandchildren, Talee Ann Reece, Jensyn Brooks Reece, Jesse Tate Reece and Jordyn Rain Reece, all of Fort Collins, CO; four sisters and two brother-in-laws, Mildred Evans, Emma Lou McConnell, Geneva and Bob Taylor, all of Valdosta, and Sue and Steve Austin of San Antonio, TX; one brother, Paul Sheffield of Cochran; many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-nephew, Justin Taylor Hobdy.

The Funeral Service for Mr. Sheffield will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at the Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, with Dr. Ken Alford and Rev. Charlie Scarbrough officiating. Interment will follow in the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Mausoleum Chapel prior to the funeral service.
