John Gregory “Possum” Powell, Lt. Col., Ret., 64, of Hahira, died on Sunday, June 27, 2021, at his home. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Lt. Col. James M. Powell and Mary Jeanne Graney. He was a graduate of Valdosta State University and he had served 3 years in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy, serving one North Atlantic tour and two Mediterranean tours. Following his career in the US Navy, Mr. Powell served 27 years in the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Lt. Col upon his retirement. Most recently he had worked as property appraiser for the Lowndes County Tax Assessors Office. Mr. Powell was a member of Hahira United Methodist Church.
Survivors are his wife, Cindy Powell of Hahira; a son, Greg (Chelsie) Powell of Hahira; grandchildren, Weslie Powell and Gage Powell; brothers, Jim (Pam) Powell, Pat (Mary) Powell, Mark (Windy) Powell all of Valdosta; a sister, Maggie Powell of Valdosta and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 1, 2021, at 10:00 am at Hahira United Methodist Church. Brother Mike Davis, Adjutant General Tom Carden, and Lt. Colonel Dave Lowery will officiate. Brother Mike Wells will conduct the graveside services. Burial with Military Honors will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the Carson McLane Funeral Home 2215 N. Patterson St., in Valdosta. Donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia.
