John Emerson Witherspoon, 83, of Valdosta died on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born in Lowndes County on December 7, 1926 to the late Darrell Emerson and Ora Mae Dasher Witherspoon. He was the owner and operator of Witherspoon Machine Shop and attended the Swilley Hill Church of God.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ava Nell Fletcher Witherspoon of Valdosta; a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Peggy Witherspoon of Valdosta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Oby Giles of Valdosta and Wanda and Wendell Dasher of Lake Park; grandchildren, Jason Witherspoon, Jeffrey Giles, Pamela Giles Hernandez all of Valdosta, Jeb Dasher of Lake Park, and Brandi Dasher Wisenbaker of Valdosta; six great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Harold and Anna Witherspoon of Hudson, Florida and Morris Witherspoon of Valdosta. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Vester Witherspoon, and two sisters, Zola Mae Teames and Margaret Faye Allen.
Services for John Witherspoon will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Bobby Friar and Rev. Brian Sayre officiating. The burial will follow in the Hickory Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
