JOEL R. PETERS, JR., 89, of Valdosta, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2011, at his home under the care of hospice, after a short illness.
He was born on August 4, 1921 in Valdosta, a son of the late Joel R. Peters, Sr. and the late Marie Knight Peters. During World War II he served as a Seaman 1st Class in the U.S. Coast Guard, and became a Shellback during his service. Mr. Peters was retired from Winn Dixie, enjoyed farming and fishing, and was an avid member of Central Avenue Church of Christ, where he was a member of the Tuesday Morning Men's Prayer Group.
He is survived by four daughters and two son-in-laws, Elizabeth P. Teasley of Valdosta, Rebecca Wisenbaker of Valdosta, Karen and Tom Nunnally of Morganton, and Ferres and Greg Bell of McDonough; a daughter-in-law, Pam A. Peters of Valdosta; grandchildren, Victoria Peters, Claire Peters, Patrick A. Teasley, Jane C. Teasley, Cameron West and wife Ashley, Lindsay Bell, Scott Bell, Sam Bell, Chris Wisenbaker, and Nathaniel Lumbra and wife Priscilla; two great-grandchildren, Canaan T. West and Vincent Lumbra; two sisters, Mary Love Field of Valdosta and Patricia Guest of Valdosta; one brother and sister-in-law, John Knight Peters and wife Sara of Valdosta; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Audrey E. Jones Peters, a son, Joel R. Peters, III; and three sisters, Martha P. Johnson, Sara Jane Peters, and Rose Marie Bowman.
Funeral Services for Mr. Peters will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 7, 2011 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. Bryan Jarvis and Mr. Jerry DeLoach officiating. Pallbearers will be David Pike, Sr., Scott Metts, Stan House, David Pike, Jr., Lee Wade and Curtis Avera. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ron Ellenberg, William Dame, Amos McCall, Sr., Carl Brinson and Lamar Cameron. Entombment will follow in the Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
