Joel Lee Warthen, 59, of Valdosta, GA and Riviera Beach, FL, died Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at his residence. He was born in Mitchell, GA on March 29, 1950. Mr. Warthen was a retired engineering consultant with Lucent Technologies after thirty two years of service, was a member of Pleasant Height Missionary Baptist Church, a member of AMORC (Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis), graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1969 and attended Palm Beach Junior College.
He is survived by his wife of thirty seven years, Retha Cooley Warthen of Valdosta and they were married on September 16, 1972, two sons, Randall Warthen of West Palm Beach, FL and Raymond Warthen of Orlando, FL, his little man, Xavier Warthen of Boynton Beach, FL, his boopsy, Brandy Janell Warthen of West Palm Beach, FL and his grandson, Jaiden Warthen of West Palm Beach, FL, his mother, Gleneice Warthen of Lake Park, FL, his mother in law, Doris Jean Cooley of Riviera Beach, FL, three brothers and one sister in law, John Lewis Warthen of Camden, NJ, Arnold and Linda Warthen and Robert Warthen of Lake Park, FL, one sister and brother in law, Lura D. and Gary Hammons of Springfield, IL, three sisters in law and one brother in law, Bettie Kelly of Riviera Beach, FL, Janice Cooley of Lake Park, FL, Ester and Ray Evans of Riviera Beach, FL, five brothers in law and one sister in law, John Cooley, Manuel Cooley, Cleveland Cooley, Dwayne Cooley, Sherman and Tamika Cooley, all of Riviera Beach, FL, a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Mr. Warthen is preceded in death by his father, Livingston Warthen, Sr., two brothers, James Warthen, Livingston Warthen, Jr. and one sister, Geraldine Hunter.
Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, January 9, 2010 at three thirty p. m. at Riverview Memorial Gardens with Reverend Bob Willis officiating. Burial will follow. The family will receive friends from two p. m. until three p. m. Saturday at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Condolences to the family may be expressed online at www.mclanefuneralservices.com.
