Joe Wilson, 87, of Hahira died Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at Langdale Hospice House. He was born on March 6, 1933 in Pinehurst, Georgia to the late Joseph H. and Frieda Youngblood Wilson and lived most his life in Lowndes County. Coach Wilson was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church and served in the United States Army for two years. He graduated from Valdosta High School, Valdosta State College and received his Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia. He served on the coaching staff of Valdosta High School for thirteen years where he coached football and basketball. Coach Wilson later became the head football coach of Lowndes High School for thirteen years and led the Vikings to their first state football championship in 1980. When he retired from Lowndes County he then went to coach at Valwood for six years. In 2019 the field at Martin Stadium was named in his honor to Joe Wilson Field at Martin Stadium.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Pendleton Wilson of Hahira; two sons and daughters in law, Jody and Mary Wilson of Lake Park, Jay and Lori Wilson of Hahira; his grandchildren, Joseph and Jamie Wilson, Jayson and Kati Wilson, Katie and Matt Smith, Cole Wilson, Taylor and Lauren Wilson, Laura Wilson; his sister in law, Susan Pendleton Everett of Albany. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his stepfather, Fred Williams.
Graveside services will be held at 10am, Thursday, June 11, 2020 at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens with Rev. Mike Davis officiating.
