Addison "Joe" Cornelius Megginson, 68, of Valdosta, died on Friday, June 8, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family, following a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on August 20, 1943 in Danville, Virginia to the late Addison Cornelius, Sr. and Mabel Carter Megginson. Mr. Megginson retired from the shopping center industry in 2009 after 27 years as General Manager at the Valdosta Mall in Valdosta, Georgia and 20 years as the General Manager at Oglethorpe Mall in Savannah, Georgia. He served 6 years as a military policeman at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia for the United States Air Force. He also worked for the Tybee Beach and Chatham County Police Departments. Joe was an avid outdoorsman, winning several awards. He was a professional bass fisherman with the organization FLW and B.A.S.S. He was also a professional skeet shooter and loved to hunt and play golf. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Valdosta.
He is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Phillip Megginson, Stephen and Shannon Megginson, and Chuck Megginson all of Savannah, Georgia; a daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Skipper Branham of Camden, South Carolina; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Lee Odom of Rocky Mountain, North Carolina, Sylvia Cornelius and Paul Schultz of Chesapeake, Virginia, and; his beloved dog and friend, Annie. Joe was preceded in death by his sisters, Nancy Jane Turner and Pocahontas Rhodes.
Services for Joe Megginson will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the Strickland Funeral Home in Pooler, Georgia. The burial will follow in the Gravel Hill Cemetery in Bloomingdale, Georgia. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Strickland Funeral Home. The Carson McLane Funeral Home is serving the Megginson family locally. The family will receive friends on Monday evening, June 11, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
