Joe Hugh Lewis passed away Thursday, September 6, 2018 at Langdale Hospice House, Valdosta, Georgia. He was the son of the late Ernest Mienhardt and Annie Lou Brown Lewis. Born in Glennville, Georgia, October 16, 1934, he was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served as a combat motion picture photographer during the Korean War. Mr. Lewis was a graduate of Georgia Southern College. During his career in education, he was on the faculty of Camden High School, Woodbine, Georgia; North Georgia vocational Technical School, Clarkesville, Georgia; Cook High School, Adel, Georgia; and Moultrie Vocational Technical School, Moultrie, Georgia, where he chaired the Business Department. He retired from Moultrie Vocational Technical School in 1993. Mr. Lewis was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Barney, Georgia. He was an avid gardener and worked until his death propagating and growing citrus to share with friends and family. His greatest pride and joy were his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sister, Nell L. Mason, and brothers, Robert Lewis, Marion Lewis, Emory Lewis and John Lewis.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Duwane W. Lewis, a daughter, Lynn Lewis, Barney and a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Deanna Lewis, Merritt Island, Florida, Grandsons, Joe, McClain, and J.T Lewis of Merritt Island, Florida. Brothers, Gene Lewis, Glennville, Georgia, Oldin Lewis, Young Harris, Georgia, sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Thurmond Hood, Roswell, Georgia and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Lewis will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 10, 2018 at Friendship Baptist Church in Barney, Georgia. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2018 from 6-8pm at Martin McLane Funeral Home, Hahira, Georgia.
