Joe C. Stubbs, MD. 83, of Valdosta, died on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Langdale Hospice House. Born in Jacksonville, FL to the late Joe Calvin Sr. & Helen Bremer Stubbs, Mr. Stubbs graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in the late 1940's. Soon after high school he joined the National Guard and then was called up to the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 26th AAA Battalion of the 24th Infantry Division that soon found itself fighting in the Korean Conflict. Following the war, Dr. Stubbs attended Emory University where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Social Fraternity and the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. He graduated from Emory with his undergraduate degree in 1955 and his medical degree in 1959. He began his residency in Atlanta at Piedmont Hospital and then continued it at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, CO. He then reenlisted in the Army and became the Director of the Nuclear Medicine Laboratory at Martin Army Hospital, Ft. Benning, GA. In 1965, Dr. Stubbs was drawn out of the Army and to Valdosta, where he began his private medical practice which would continue until 2014, nearly 50 years. A career that would care deeply for the patients he treated, advanced the quality of medicine in his community and promoted other individuals who sought to become doctors. Dr. Stubbs was affiliated with the Medical Association of Georgia for many years, serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors in the late 1970's. He was a delegate to the American Medical Association for many years and served as Chief of Staff of South Georgia Medical Center in the early 1980's and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at SGMC in the late 1980's. Dr. Stubbs also was a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, and a member of the American Society of Internal Medicine, the South Georgia Medical Society, the Medical Association of Georgia, and the American Medical Association. He was a member of the Valdosta Rotary Club and Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Matilda Walker Stubbs of Valdosta; two sons and daughters in law, Joe Calvin, III, & Melissa Bentley Stubbs of Valdosta and Daniel Bellamy & Meredith Moseley Stubbs of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Matilda Ann Stubbs of Atlanta, Joe Calvin Stubbs IV, of Valdosta, Nina Gretchen Stubbs of Valdosta and Daniel Bellamy Stubbs, Jr. of Atlanta. Also surviving is his brother in law and sister in law, Daniel Jackson & Judy Walker of Jacksonville, FL, several nieces & nephews and his devoted employees, Amanda Wakefield, Peggy Phillips, Edith Sermon-Hedgeman and Gayle Smith Zeigler (dec.), also the physicians that Dr. Stubbs mentored through the years, Allen Woods, MD, Bridgett Moore, MD, Andrew Thomas McRae, III, MD, Scott Batchelor, MD, and George Staton, MD.
A funeral for Dr. Stubbs will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Christ Episcopal Church. The Reverend David Johnson will officiate. The private committal of the urn will occur in the church memorial garden at a later time. The family will receive friends in the church parish hall following the service.
