Jocelyn Sherman Boyle

August 20, 1952 — June 28, 2011

Jocelyn Sherman Boyle, 58, of Valdosta, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2011. Her death occurred due to a sudden stroke she experienced while serving on jury duty. Jocelyn's life was characterized by her selflessness, caring and giving spirit which was evident in her choice of profession. After graduating from Valdosta State College she worked as an IPI teacher, an elementary school teacher for many years, then later worked in the RVI program for special needs students at Lowndes High School and ended her teaching career as a substitute teacher. Her life passion of helping others continued as a child care provider at Park Avenue United Methodist Church where she cared for and loved generations of babies and children of church members and preschool teachers. She enjoyed babysitting for several church families and caring for pets for families when they were away from home. Jocelyn enjoyed reading, baking, making puzzles and knitting. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood. Her love of babies and children was evident by all who knew her, through her gentle quiet spirit, her faithfulness, patience and loving manner.

Survivors include her husband to whom she was married to just shy of 37 years, James W. Boyle of Valdosta; three daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Boyle, Stephanie Ruth Boyle both of Valdosta, Allison and Brian Veal of Forest Park, one grandson, Aaron Veal of Forest Park; her mother, Sarah (Sally) Sherman, her brothers, Paul Sherman and Tim Sherman all of Valdosta; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dr. Anita B. Renfroe and Aubrey Vance Renfroe, Col. USAF, Retired of Millersville, Pennsylvania; a niece, Audra Lynn and Sean Campbell and three great nieces, Emily, Rachel and Abigail Campbell of Powder Springs, and a nephew, Aubrey Nicholas Renfroe of Millersville, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Boyle was preceded in death by her father, Reverend Dr. Goddard Sherman who was a minister in the United Methodist Church.


Funeral services will be held at the Park Avenue United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. Reverend Hale Bishop, Reverend Lance Kindred and Col. Aubrey Vance Renfroe will officiate. Graveside services will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens and family and friends are welcome to attend. The Boyle family will receive visitors at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Friday evening July 1, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. There will be a viewing during calling hours and again on Saturday at the church between 9:00 and 9:45 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity or to Park Avenue United Methodist Church Nursery Ministries in memory of Jocelyn Sherman Boyle.
