J.L. Rodgers, Sr.

Joseph Lamar “J.L.” Rodgers, Sr., 84, of Columbus, died Monday, August 29, 2005 at Columbus Hospice House. Born on October 20, 1920, in Lake Park, he was the son of Henry Franklin Rodgers and Rosa Mae Peterson Rodgers, both deceased. Mr. Rodgers was retired from Gulf Life Insurance. He began his insurance career as 1st District Manager for Interstate Life Insurance Company which became Gulf Life here in Valdosta until he moved to Americus in 1969. During WWII he served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific and the occupation of Japan. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Americus, was president of the Americus High School Booster Club and was a member of the Kiwanis and Elks Clubs. Mr. Rodgers loved deep sea fishing out of Mexico Beach, Florida where he maintained a home. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Melba Duncan Rodgers of Columbus, two sons and daughters in law, Joe L. Jr., and Jan Rodgers, Sherrod H. and Debra Rodgers all of Tifton; grandchildren, Joe L. Rodgers, III of Moultrie, Kurt S. Rodgers of Valdosta, Kade Rodgers of Tifton, sisters in law, Grace Traynham of Valdosta, Ada Rodgers of Jacksonville, Florida., numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Rodgers was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Sherrod Rodgers, brothers, Chester Rodgers, Virgil Rodgers and Louis Rodgers, and a sister, Alma Lovett.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Reverend Sam Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Wednesday evening at the Carson McLane Funeral Home from 6 – 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Columbus Hospice 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, GA 31909.
