Jimmy Walker Sr., 90, of Valdosta, died on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born on December 7, 1933, in Valdosta to the late Vernon and Esta Mae Walker. Mr. Walker attended Valdosta High School and played for Valdosta High Wildcats under Coach Wright Bazemore. He later served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Walker earned his bachelor’s degree from Valdosta State College (VSU) and went to work for the state of Georgia in the department of health and human services. He served for 37 years with the state and retired as the Director for Infectious Diseases. Mr. Walker was an avid golfer, liked to fish, loved watching the Georgia Bulldogs play football, and above all, loved and cherished his wife. He attended Northside Baptist Church.
Mr. Walker is survived by his wife of 67 years, Carolyn Walker of Valdosta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy Jr., and Lisa Walker, and Christopher and Jessica Walker all of Valdosta; grandchildren and their spouses, Julia and P.J. Fender, Matthew and Megan Walker, Ashley and Eddie Medina, Candace Trant, Hunter and Jasmine Walker, and Katie Walker; 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded by two brothers, Bobby Walker and David Walker.
Services for Jimmy Walker, Sr. will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. The burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo, Georgia. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
