Jerry Powell

Jerry Powell, age 85, of Alpharetta, peacefully passed away on Friday, October 27, 2023, at Magnolia Place in Roswell, GA.

She was born on November 6, 1937, in Ashburn, GA, to the late Cecil Wilbon Shealy, Sr. and Ruth Evelyn Barfield Shealy.


Mrs. Powell accomplished many things throughout her life. She graduated from Georgia Teachers College in 1959 and dedicated over 40 years of her career as a home economist. Her varied positions included working for The Georgia Power Company, Lowndes County Extension Service, and as a teacher at Lowndes County Middle School. Mrs. Powell was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Valdosta and held memberships in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Captain James Monroe Briggs Chapter, and the national society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Colonel Ebenezer Folsom Chapter. She was also a valued member of the Valdosta Garden Club.


Mrs. Powell’s talents extended beyond her professional life. She found joy in cooking, baking, meal planning, and hosting loved ones. Furthermore, she possessed exceptional sewing skills. Mrs. Powell will be lovingly remembered as a devoted wife, mother and sister.


Mrs. Powell is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Leigh and Tim Carpenter, residing in Alpharetta, GA, and her son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Carla Powell, residing in Hazlehurst, GA. She is also survived by her sisters: Diane Childs of Monroe, GA, Beverly Harper of Cordele, GA, and Miriam Talley of Loganville, GA. Mrs. Powell leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles H. Powell, and her brothers, Cecil Wilbon Shealy, Jr., and William Kendall Shealy.


A graveside service will be held at 11am on Monday, October 30, 2023, at the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Prior to the service, friends and family are invited to pay their respects on Sunday from 4-6pm at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1306, Valdosta, GA 31603. Online condolences may be shared at www.mclanecares.com.
