Jefferson (Jeff) Wier Hunt, 87, of Valdosta, peacefully passed away Saturday morning, May 14, 2016 at home after a short illness.
He was born on August 6, 1928 in Macon, Georgia to the late Jefferson Brooks Hunt and Lucia Wier Hunt. At an early age his family moved to Valdosta, where he lived the majority of his life. Jeff attended Valdosta High School, where he was a manager of the football team. During his senior year of high school, he asked permission from his father to enlist in the United States Navy, in the midst of World War II. After serving, Jeff returned to Valdosta, where he completed high school. He then attended Emory College in Valdosta and South Georgia College in Douglas, where he received a degree in Business Administration.
After 30 successful years, Jeff retired from hotel operations, management and development in the Valdosta-Lake Park area. He once said, "tourism and travel is one of the largest industries in the United States and it is very interesting and rewarding work." Jeff worked diligently to promote and grow the hospitality and tourism industry for Valdosta and Lowndes County.

He was a member of the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce where he was on the board of directors, Red Carpet Committee and military affairs committee. He was also past president of the Lake Park Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Tourism Commission. Jeff also served on the board of directors of the United Way and the board of directors of the Georgia Restaurant Association. Most recently, he served as a volunteer at the South Georgia Regional Library in Valdosta, due to his love of reading.
Jeff was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Valdosta, where he was a devoted participant of the choir and the board of stewards for many years. One of Jeff's favorite accomplishments was his 22 years of singing with Bottie Chitty and The Singing Americans.
Jeff was a loving and faithful husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley Roberts Hunt of Valdosta; daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Terry Stein of Flat Rock, North Carolina; daughter, Leslie Singleton of Bishop, Georgia; daughter, Esther Hunt of Atlanta, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ben Futch of Lake Park, Georgia; grandchildren and their spouses, Brooks and Jackie Futch, Pearce Futch, Leigh Futch, Jamie and Lance Fendley, Hunt Singleton, Hollie Singleton; great-grandchildren, Hannah Futch and Hudson Fendley.
