Dorothy Jean Sheffield Radford Lanier, age 93, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2021 after a period of declining health.
Jean was born on Christmas Eve 1927 in Brooks County, Georgia to John Thomas Sheffield and Ruth Valentine Smith Sheffield. The youngest of their five children, Jean was doted on by her brothers and sisters. She was a devout Christian who accepted Jesus at an early age.
Jean attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and then married the love of her life, Will Radford, shortly after World War II. They made their home on his family’s farm south of Quitman. She taught school for several years before staying home to take care of their son and daughter.
“Miss Jean”, as she was known to most, was a gracious hostess. She was known for her cooking and her clever sense of humor. She was a member of Quitman United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School class. In the last few years of her life, her memory failed her, but she still had a smile and a kind word for every person she saw.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Susan Jean Radford; her son and daughter-in-law, A.J. and Molly Radford; granddaughters and their husbands, Eliza and John “Mac” McCall, Lauren Radford and John Futch, and Erin and Joe Ed Holt; great-grandchildren, Will McCall, Kelly McCall, Sam McCall, Dodie Basford, Lucy Basford, Ethan Futch, Connor Holt, and RJ Holt; and a large extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband Will, her parents, her siblings, and her second husband, Bill Lanier.
A private burial will be held at the Radford-Denson cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date when it is safe for family and friends to gather. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Quitman United Methodist Church. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com. Carson McLane Funeral Home.
