Jean Ellen Mason, 74, of Valdosta, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Born on April 22,1950, Jean grew up in Sarasota, Florida. While attending Sarasota High School, she enjoyed her time as the drum major for the Marching Sailor Band and started dating George Mason. Jean and George were married on June 15, 1970, in Sarasota. After her high school graduation, she briefly attended college obtaining an associate’s degree, followed by dental assistant school. Jean worked for several years as a dental assistant.  Soon after their marriage, Jean and George moved to Quitman, Georgia, and then settled in Valdosta in the early 1980s. After moving to Valdosta, Jean worked as the department head secretary for the Valdosta State University Music Department until the early 1990’s. A member of the Valdosta Choral Guild, Jean had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing in church choirs. She was a talented crafter, and could often be found painting, crocheting, and quilting. Jean was a member of Park Avenue Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Eastern Star and Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity.

Jean is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, George Mason; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Steve Turnmeyer of Valdosta, son and daughter-in-law, Erik and Amy Mason of Greensboro, North Carolina; grandchildren, Mason Thompson, Aiden Mason, Marislynn Turnmeyer; and her beloved canine companion, Bentley. She is preceded in death by her grandson, Dane Turnmeyer, mother, Jackie Anderson and stepfather Bob Anderson.

The Mason’s will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. At 6:45 p.m. a prayer will be offered by Reverend David Tart.
