Jane Gates Mckey

Jane Gates McKey, 86, of Valdosta since 1938, passed away Friday, March 25, 2005 after a lengthy illness. She was born on August 31, 1918 to the late Samuel and Lillian Gates of Mount Airy, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Converse “Bud” McKey. She also was a member of the First Baptist Church in Valdosta where she once served as church Librarian.
Mrs. McKey graduated from Valdosta State College and taught English at Valdosta High School for much of her teaching career. She later worked as a librarian at Lowndes High School and The Valwood School. She was also a member of the Mystery Ball Club.

Survivors include one sister, Elizabeth Nickel of Anderson, SC; one son, William Clay McKey of Valdosta; daughter and son in law, Martha and Gary Bass, Jr.; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Justin Bass; one great grandchild, all of Marietta; numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 28, 2005 at Sunset Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Phillip West officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Valdosta.
