James Wilson Bowen

James Wilson Bowen (Jim) passed away peacefully at Langdale Hospice House on Saturday, March 7, 2020, after a brief illness. He was born on October 31, 1928, in LaGrange, Georgia, and had lived in Georgia all of his life. Jim served in the United States Navy on the USS Dace submarine. He was owner of W.A. Gooch Lumber Company until his retirement. A long time member of First Baptist Church of Valdosta, Jim was an active member of the No Name Sunday School class. He was also past president of Valdosta Country Club and past president of Sandpiper Condominium Association in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Jim enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and serving as a Red Coat volunteer at South Georgia Medical Center for many years. He was a loving husband, father, Big Daddy, and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Hayman Bowen; his daughter Barbara Bowen Turrentine (Richard) of Atlanta, Georgia; his grandson Robert Bowen Hendrix (Jordan) and his great granddaughters Ella Palmer and Malin James Hendrix, all of Dallas, Texas; a brother-in-law Harold Hayman of Albany, Georgia; a sister-in-law Beverly Barber of Leesburg, Georgia; many nieces, nephews and his faithful puppy Bella. He was predeceased by his parents Nell Avis Bowen and W.H. Bowen Sr.; his brother, W.H Bowen, Jr; and his sister Helen Simmons.
The family would like to thank his doctors, his caregivers and the staff of Langdale Hospice House for their support and encouragement.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Chuck Owens and Reverend Mac Weaver, both of First Baptist Church of Valdosta, officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 10:00 A.M.
