James W. "Jim" Yates, peacefully passed away on November 11, 2023, at Langdale Hospice House in Valdosta. He was 91 years old. Born on March 1, 1932, in Dalzell, South Carolina, Jim was the son of the late Stephen Walter Yates and Mazie Smith Yates.
Jim graduated from Hillcrest High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force as an Aircraft Electrician stationed at Moody Field in the early 1950s. During this time, he met Betty Howell from Adel, and they married on March 19, 1955. After leaving the Air Force, Jim continued to serve at Moody in the Civil Service for an impressive 32 years before retiring. Following his retirement, Jim transitioned to a new role at Valdosta State College, where he worked in Construction Purchasing for 13 years.
Outside of work, Jim enjoyed fishing in the local ponds and was known for his kind and gentle nature. He was deeply cherished by his family and friends. He was a member of Greenwood Baptist Church.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Betty Yates, of Valdosta, his daughter, Sharon Bryan, his son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Denise Yates, all from Valdosta. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Adam and Rebecca Bryan, from Dunwoody, GA, Landon and Colleen Bryan from Anchorage, AK, Jamie and Joseph Wilson from Hahira, and Colby and Hailee Yates from Valdosta. Jim's great grandchildren, Mackey Yates, Macy Yates, and Campbell Wilson, brought him immense joy. Additionally, he is survived by numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews, and other dear family members. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Mark Bryan.
A graveside service to honor Jim's life will be held on Monday, November 13, 2023, at 2:30pm at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 1-2pm at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia at 2263 Pineview Drive, Valdosta, GA 31602. Online condolences can be shared at www.mclanecares.com.
