James Elliott Shaw, 82, of Valdosta, Georgia died on Sunday, May 19, 2024, in his home surrounded by his family. He was born on August 11, 1941, to the late Elliott Roy and Frances Crosby Shaw. James worked for most of his life at Shaw Brothers Tent and Awning. He was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and faithful member of Covenant Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for more than 10 years.
James is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Phyllis Whitley Shaw, and daughter, Kareen Massey, and sons Trevor (Stacy) Shaw and Derek (Michele) Shaw; his 8 grandchildren: Jamie (Melvin) Simmons of Lenox, Blake (Tiffany) Taylor of Brunswick, Savannah (Travis) Dasher, Meredith (Matt) Marsh of Louisville, KY, Tyson (Halle) Shaw, Ashley (Micah) Phillips, Amber (Palmer) Betts of Hahira, and Grayson Moffet of Atlanta and 7 great-grandchildren: Jase, Jude and Jed Simmons, Hallie and Hayden Phillips, Avery Dasher, and Bella Betts. He is also survived by his brother, Cleveland (Gail) Shaw, his sister, Gwenette Farmer, and sister-in law, Sylvia Shaw. James was preceded in death by his brothers David and Winston Shaw and his great-grandson, Bo Betts.
James enjoyed all things outdoors: yard work, hunting, fishing, and cheering on his family at various sporting events. He was fun-loving, compassionate, and kind. His heart to visit those in need of encouragement has impacted many lives. He will be most remembered as a godly man who loved and cared for others well.
Services for James E. Shaw will be held on Friday, May 24, 2024, at 11:00am in the sanctuary of Covenant Baptist Church with Pastor Josh Pool officiating. The burial will follow in the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00pm at Carson McLane Funeral home.
