James L. Puckett, Sr., 82, of Valdosta, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 26, 2010, at his home after a short battle with lung cancer.
He was born November 19, 1927, in Hahira, a son of the late Edward Douglas Puckett, Sr. and the late Mary Hall Puckett. He grew up in Valdosta and served in the U.S. Navy for two years, stationed at Annapolis, MD, before graduating from Valdosta High School with the Class of 1949. Following graduation he began his employment at Owens-Illinois, retiring in 1998. Mr. Puckett was a longtime member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church. He was a good provider, loved his God and family, and enjoyed traveling with his grandchildren. He was an avid NASCAR fan and Braves fan, he loved history, gardening, country and gospel music, especially the Gaithers, and had coached a city Women's Softball team.
He is survived by two daughters, Sandy Puckett of Valdosta, and Karen Puckett Suttles of Douglas; three grandchildren, Autumn Phillips and husband Chuck of Valdosta, Alex Suttles of Douglas, and Morgan Puckett of Hahira; two great-granddaughters, Ryleigh and Bailee Musgrove of Valdosta; a daughter-in-law, Tricia Puckett of Hahira; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Marie Wellmaker Puckett, a son, James (Jimbo) Puckett, Jr., and two brothers, Jack Puckett and Ed Puckett, Jr.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Puckett will be held at 11:00 am Friday, October 29, 2010 at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, with Rev. Willie Beasley officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Mr. Puckett's family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
