James L. "Jimmy" Chaney, 86, of Valdosta, died at his home on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Born in Colquitt County, Jimmy walked to Valdosta at an early age, moved into a local boardinghouse and went to work at the Ritz Theatre. Through hard work he advanced to a managerial position with Martin Theatres. His continued good work ethic and his entrepreneurial spirit carried him to success. Mr. Chaney founded and operated Dependable Sanitation for 28 years and purchased and operated Handy Dan Ice for over 30 years. After retirement, Jimmy and his wife, Elvalena, enjoyed traveling in their RV all over North America and he loved watching Westerns on TV. A dedicated Mason, he received his 50 year membership certificate from the Azalea Lodge. Mr. Chaney was a member of New Harvest United Methodist Church.
Survivors are his wife Elvalena Chaney of Valdosta; daughter Nancy Elaine Chaney of Valdosta, daughter and son in law, Peggy and Barry Godfrey of Valdosta, grandchildren, Michael David (Diane) Chaney of Atlanta, Christopher Shawn Chaney of Columbus, Ohio, Heather Elaine (Luke) McGee of Valdosta; great grandson, Findlay McGee of Valdosta; special caregivers, Melissa Wiseman, Louise Washington; numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a son, James David Chaney.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Larry Hauser and Reverend Tyler Barrett will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday morning at the funeral home. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.
