James L. Austin

October 27, 1919 — November 15, 2009

JAMES L. AUSTIN, 90, of Lake Park, went to be with the Lord after a short illness on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at his home.

He was born October 27, 1919 in Winder, a son of John Rich and Lillie Helton Austin. He had worked at Bell Aircraft Corp, near Atlanta, before entering the U.S. Marine Corps., serving at Parris Island and Cherry Point during World War II. In 1949 he graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Societies. Mr. Austin was employed by the Internal Revenue Service in Augusta, Columbus, and lastly in Atlanta. After retiring in 1978 he and his wife, Lynette, moved to Lake Park.

Mr. Austin was a member of the Lake Park Christian Church. He was an avid Bulldog football fan, and enjoyed his retirement playing golf, gardening, and most of all spending time with his granddaughters, who were very special to him, and helped care and comfort him during his recent illness. Mr. Austin was well loved by all who knew him, especially babies and children.

In addition to his wife of 70 years, Lynette C. Austin, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Rose Marie and Billy D. Pounds of College Park; one son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Cheryl Austin of Lake Park; three granddaughters, Karen Pounds of Rome, Marlie Drummond and husband Mike of Ellijay, and Jessica Austin of Conyers; two great-granddaughters, Baleigh and Morgan Drummond of Ellijay; one sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Benny DeLay of Winder; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral Services for Mr. Austin will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, November 19, 2009, at McLane Lakewood Funeral Home, Lake Park, with Bro. David Lamon and Bro. Aubrey Bussell officiating. Interment will follow in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Austin's family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.
