James H. Colyer, 79, of Valdosta, died Sunday, November 16, 2008 at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville. He was born on April 7, 1929 in Valdosta to the late Milford Hayes and Zollie Ramsey Colyer. Mr. Colyer has been the owner and operator of Colyer's Jewelers since 1981. Prior to opening his own business he worked at Horace Stephenson Jewelers for thirty one years. Mr. Colyer was a member of New Covenant Church, served in the United States Army during the occupation of Japan and after that he attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois where he studied watch and jewelry making.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Pindar Colyer of Valdosta, two daughters and sons in law, Sharon and Benny Carter, Kay and Keith Grimes, one son and daughter in law, Gary and Wanda Colyer, all of Valdosta, seven grandchildren, Dallas Carter, Julie Carter Rentz and her husband Guy, Sara Grimes, Lisa Hall and her husband Dr. Jonathan Hall, Jeremy Colyer, Dr. Laurie Colyer and Lindsey Colyer, three great grandchildren, Eve, Josiah and Allison Hall. Mr. Colyer is preceded in death by one daughter, Frances Jane Colyer.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at two p. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make donations to New Covenant Church, Jacobs Ladder or to your favorite charity. The family will receive friends from six until eight p. m. Monday at the funeral home.
