James Corbett, 92, of Lake Park, died on Friday June 25, 2010 at Langdale Hospice House. Mr. Corbett was born in Lake Park to the late Ewell & Sarah Hiers Corbett. He lived in Lake Park until he joined the Navy during WWII. In the Navy, Mr. Corbett served on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown and was on the ship when it was attacked and lost during the Battle of Midway in the Pacific. After the war, he moved to Miami and worked for several years at Jackson Memorial Hospital as an ice boy. He then attended and graduated from George T. Baker Aviation School in Miami. He went on to work for Eastern Airlines as an aviation mechanic for 22 years. After his retirement, he moved back to Lake Park and raised cattle. Mr. Corbett loved listening to old time country music and attended Sardis Baptist Church. He was a man of few words with an enormous heart.
Mr. Corbett is survived by his wife, Ruth Amerson Corbett of Lake Park, two daughters and a son in law, Peggy & Robbie Stoops of West Palm Beach, FL, and Sarah Friedel of York, PA; four grandchildren, Robert Stoops of Lake Park, Timothy Bauer of PA, Michelle King of West Palm, FL, and Andrew Bauer of PA; a great grandchild, Rylan Stoops; and six sisters, Gladys Davis of Jasper, FL, Mary Tomlinson of Dasher, Lucille Petty of Jasper, FL, Myrtis Hale of Tavares, FL, Helen Sears of Lake City, FL and Connie Register of Jasper, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth McFarland Corbett.
Funeral services for Mr. Corbett will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 in the chapel of McLane Lakewood Funeral Home in Lake Park. Rev. Garvie Nichols will officiate. Burial will follow in Lake Park Cemetery.
