James Edmond Turner, Sr. (Usaf, Major Ret.)

June 16, 1931 — September 16, 2011

James Edmond Turner, Sr., (USAF, Major Ret.), 80 of Valdosta died Friday, September 16, 2011 at the Langdale Hospice House. He was born on June 16, 1931 in St. Louis, Missouri and had lived in Valdosta since 1966. Mr. Turner was a member of the First United Methodist Church and retired from the United States Air Force as a pilot and served three tours in Vietnam. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his Masters Degree from Valdosta State College. Mr. Turner served on the YMCA Board, had taught history in the Brooks County School System and had been a teacher evaluator for the State of Georgia. He enjoyed travelling and had traveled the world extensively having been on mission trips to the Philippines, France, Nicaragua and Spain.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Horne Turner of Valdosta, three sons and daughters in law, James E., Jr. and Kathy Turner of Valdosta, Mark A. and Debbie Turner of Woodstock, David and Tonya Turner of Knoxville, TN., three grandchildren, Jamie Turner, Lacey Turner, Laura (John) Washnock, great grandchildren, Aubrey Washnock, Aidan Washnock and Jack Washnock, his sister and brother in law, Delores and Fred Michael of Blairsville, his brother and sister in law, Doug and Laura Lee Turner of Clover, SC., sister in law, Thelma Troutman of Fuquay-Varina, NC.

Funeral services will be held at 10am, Monday, September 19, 2011 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Moon and Rev. John McGowan officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4-6pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall Renovation Fund, 220 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, GA 31601.
