James D. Bennett

James D. Bennett, 58, of Lake Park passed away on Friday, December 4, 2015 at Langdale Hospice House following a lengthy illness. He was born in Homerville, Georgia on September 7, 1957 to the late Vernon and Onnie Lee Register Bennett and was raised in Statenville, Georgia. He graduated from Echols County High School in 1976 and afterward attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, and Chabot College in Hayward, California. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served four years in the Navy and six in the Naval Reserves. In 1986, he began a career as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in San Jose, California and held various Postal Service positions in Jacksonville, Florida, Valdosta, Norcross, Athens and Quincy, Florida until he retired as Postmaster of Monticello, Florida on December 31, 2013. Mr. Bennett receive a degree in journalism from ABAC and was a published author of many books.

Survivors include five sisters and brothers-in-law, Gwen and James Swilley and Violet and David Corbett all of Lake Park, Hilda and Ronald Richardson of Naylor, Nell and Billy Smith of Valdosta, and Kim and Sam Fletcher of Lake Park; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Muril and Sheila Bennett of Jasper, Florida, Lamar and Glenda Bennett of Jennings, Florida, and Tony and Judy Bennett of Howell, Georgia; eighteen nieces and nephews and twenty four great-nieces and great-nephews; two special friends, Paula Wagner of Lavallette, New Jersey who donated bone marrow for Mr. Bennett through Be The Match Foundation in 1992, and Nathinee Chen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one godchild, Tin Tin Chin.

A graveside service for James D. Bennett will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Carter Cemetery at Sardis Baptist Church in Echols County with Rev. Benny Olliff officiating.
