James B. "Jim" Maddox, 89, Valdosta, died on Sunday, October 9, 2016, at Langdale Hospice House. Born in Andalusia, Alabama, March 19, 1927, Jim was the son of the late John Matthew Maddox and Katie Belle Nichols Maddox. Growing up in Andalusia, he graduated from Andalusia High in 1944, where he played football, acquiring the nick name of "Dude". Jim also played basketball and was on the wrestling team. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII and was briefly stationed in Bermuda. Using his GI bill to further his education, he attended and graduated from Auburn University in the early 1950's. While at Auburn, Jim met and married Delores Jones. He taught school and coached before beginning a career with National Cash Register, which brought the Maddox's to Valdosta in 1963. Jim was a true entrepreneur, and was involved in several successful business endeavors, including the opening of the Burger Barn in the mid 70's, and owning and operating Maddox Stone and Gravel, a rock aggregate business, for ten years prior to selling the company in 2011. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School.
Jim was an avid bridge player and golfer. He also enjoyed fishing with friends. Jim nurtured all of his relationships, and he never met a stranger.
Survivors are his wife, Barbra Maddox of Valdosta, daughter, Jamie (Danny) Pitts of Valdosta; grandchildren, Jess Davis of Valdosta, Bart (Angie) Davis of Valdosta, Carly Davis of Atlanta, Samantha (Jon) Flowers of Roswell, Jenny (Josh) Carroll of Valdosta, Mitchell Pitts of Valdosta, Reese (Amy) Pitts of Tallahassee; step children, Layne and Al Bostom of Boca Raton, Florida, Kellie Nelson of Valdosta, Dean Studdard of Valdosta; four step grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Edwards of Holly Hill, South Carolina, brothers, Ken (Joanne) Maddox of Montgomery, Alabama, Bill Maddox of Valdosta; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Delores, daughter and son in law, Debbie and Buck Davis, daughter, Terri Maddox, two brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Mac Weaver and Reverend Chuck Owens will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday before the service from 2 – 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia or to First Baptist Church.
