James Andrew (Jim) Herring

August 9, 1954 — April 16, 2014

James Andrew Herring, 59, of Lilburn, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Born August 9, 1954 in Brunswick, Georgia, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lafayette Herring, Sr. who preceded him in death. Jim received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in History from Valdosta State University and attended Advent Christian Church.
Jim is survived by his wife Beverly Phelps Herring, brother and sister-in-law Sam and Geraldine Herring of Valdosta, Georgia; brothers- and sisters-in-law Billy and Kathy Bryant of Jacksonville, Florida; Alan and Sue Phelps of Morrison, Tennessee; and Ken and Lynn Phelps of Thomasville, Georgia; uncle and aunt Charles and Peggie Seymour of Kennesaw, Georgia; aunt Alwilda Cunningham of Brunswick, Georgia; special cousin Julie Seymour Lowrey of Atlanta, Georgia; nephews and nieces Matt and Kayla Herring, Meredith and Jeremy Lewis, Kimberly and Reggie Exum, Brian Bryant, Marc and Carissa Phelps, and Patrick Phelps; five great-nieces and two great-nephews; and his loyal canine companion, Jamey. Jim was very beloved by his family and friends for his warmth, his great sense of humor, and his contagious laugh.
After moving to Atlanta from Washington, DC in 1989, Jim worked as an Archivist with the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, where he assisted many writers and scholars with research, led tours of the Library for countless students and visitors, and provided fact verification information for several television programs, including Meet the Press and Jeopardy.
Jim had a great love of all types of music--from classical to classic rock--especially the Beatles. He combined his passion for music and travel when he traveled to Liverpool, Abbey Road, the Cavern Club, and the gate to Strawberry Fields on a trip to England several years ago. He also had a tremendous love of animals, and enjoyed feeding every songbird, hummingbird, squirrel, and chipmunk that came across his backyard retreat from year to year. In addition, he always encouraged his friends and family to rescue and adopt animals from shelters.
