Jackie Studstill Harris, 95, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at Fellowship Home. Born in Lakeland on January 18, 1916, she was the daughter of the late William Hustus Studstill and Eunice Bridges Studstill. She was a 1931 graduate of Lanier County High School. In 1932 Jackie came to Valdosta to attend college at Georgia State Women's College, now Valdosta State University. The sports history of the college began in 1936 when Jackie Studstill Harris, star player for Phi Lambda Basketball Team was named an All American guard, the only player from Georgia sponsored by the Central States Basketball Associates. Consequently, Jackie was inducted into the Valdosta State University Sports Hall of Fame as an All American Basketball Player in 1998. She graduated from GSWC in 1936 and maintained a lifelong interest in athletic programs at Valdosta High School and Valdosta State University.
Jackie married Melville "Pappy" Harris and they had two daughters, Marsha and Carol. In 1948 she opened a children's shop that later became Jackie's. Active in civic and community organizations, Jackie served on the Valdosta City School Board in 1968 and she established a children's day care center in the early 1970's. Jackie was an active member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors are her daughters, Marsha Harris Rudolph and Jack Rudolph, Carol Harris Barker and Sirois Barker all of Valdosta; grandchildren, Russ and Megan Rudolph of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Coleman and Shannon Rudolph of Canton, Kevin and Dr. Meredith Barker of Birmingham, Alabama, Brinson and Lori Barker of Valdosta; and ten great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Melville "Pappy" Harris.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 4, 2011, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church.
Dr. Bob Moon and Pastor Brinson Barker will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 4 - 6 p.m. Donations may be made to the Jackie Harris Basketball Scholarship Fund through the VSU Foundation or to First United Methodist Church.
