Jack T. Hasling, Jr. died at his home in Lake Park, Georgia, on February 15, 2023 at age 77. Dr. Hasling had a lifelong passion for learning and teaching, particularly in the discipline of sociology. All his adult life, he credited the education he received at Jesuit High School in New Orleans as the basis of his intellectual curiosity and development. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees, from Loyola University of New Orleans and the University of Georgia, respectively. He retired from the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice at Valdosta State University after 27 years of teaching. Beyond his professional life, Jack was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His loyalty and generosity to his many friends were well known, as was his penchant for collecting and connecting people. His extended family in New Orleans knew he could be counted upon to stay in touch and visit often. Jack was an avid reader and writer, and had a keen understanding of cultural and political trends and events. His crowded bookshelves included extensive collections of the Beats, Vidal, and Donald Harington. He never missed the PBS Newshour; his dedication to Turner Classic Movies inspired an astute observation by a young grandson, “Grandpa Jack likes gray movies.” He enjoyed running, traveling, fine dining, and careful listening to music, especially jazz. Jack will be missed by his wife, Jane of Lake Park, his son Glen and daughter-in-law Kathleen of Marietta, Georgia, his daughter Danielle and son-in-law Jeff of Norfolk, Virginia, his five grandsons, Jackson, Callan, Murphy, Riley, Miles, and his brothers Don and David. No memorial service is planned at this time; however, friends and family are encouraged to remember and reminisce wherever and whenever they gather. Contributions to the ACLU, Doctors Without Borders, or WWOZ, public radio in New Orleans, would honor his memory.
