JACK C. BARFIELD, 80, of Statenville, passed away Friday, November 6, 2009, at Smith Northview Hospital after a short illness.
Jack was born March 25, 1929 in Moultrie, a son of David Barfield, Sr. and Mattie Rutland Barfield. He had worked at Strickland Cotton Mill for 32 years, until it's closing, and then for Statenville Water System for nearly 20 years. For the last 26 years he has worked for the Echols County Commissioners as a Custodian, until illness forced him to retire.
Mr. Barfield was a member of Statenville United Methodist Church. He enjoyed flowers and working his small farm, raising livestock and birds. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed watching his grandchildren at Echols County Wildcats games, and he loved the Atlanta Braves.
In addition to his wife, Lillian Barfield of Statenville, he is survived by four children, Ricky and wife Terri Bass of Statenville, Gwen Barfield of Valdosta, Keith and wife Sissie Bass of Valdosta, and Darryl and wife Jo Bass of Statenville; eleven grandchildren, Michelle and husband Bert Copeland, Charles Hutto, Brooke Bass, Tracy and husband Bari Cariker, Nikki Barfield, Brandon and wife Falon Bass, Brandi and husband Albert Umpleby, Crystal Musgrove, Addison Bass, Brianne and husband Barry Deas, and Casey Bass; nine great-grandchildren, Erin, Emmy, Grant, and Evan Copeland, Jerard and Dillon Lane, Ashton and Annalyse Deas, and Tyler Tucker; two sisters, Betty Jean Foskey of Valdosta, and Barbara Williamson of Valdosta; three sisters-in-law, Betty Barfield of Naylor, Wanna Barfield of Lake Park, and Pearl Barfield of Avon Park, FL; one brother-in-law, Pafford Carter of Lake Park; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, four brothers, David Jr., Sonny, Jimmy and Wayne Barfield, and a sister, Mary Carter.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, November 9, 2009, at Statenville United Methodist Church with Rev. Fred Foster officiating. Interment will follow in Statenville Cemetery. The Barfield family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Sunday at the Carson McLane Funeral Home, Valdosta.
