J. T. Copeland, 77, of Lake Park, died Saturday, April 22, 2006 at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. He was born on January 26, 1929, in Lowndes County to the late George and Eunice Copeland. He attended the Dasher Bible School which is now Georgia Christian School in Dasher. Mr. Copeland was a member of the Central Avenue Church of Christ. He retired in 1987 from the Valdosta Police Dept as Captain after 32 years of service. He served on the Inauguration Police Department for Presidents Eisenhower, Johnson and Nixon.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marion Dees Copeland of Lake Park; two daughters and a son-in- law, Teresea & Herman Story of Savannah, Cynthia L. Copeland of Valdosta; one son and daughter-in- law, Tilford and Diane Copeland of Lawrenceville; grandchildren, John Lee & Stephanie Story, Ellabell, GA, Cristy and Jon Waters, Tracy & Steve Waters all of Warner Robins; great grandchildren, Coleson and Connor Story, Chase and Chandler Waters, Ty Copeland Waters; four sisters and brothers in law, Bernice Pollock, Mary and Willis Stewart, Helen and Ralph Hamn, Ann and Wayne Stewart, Dan Crapps. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Clara Eunice Copeland; two sisters, Marjorie Tomlinson, Virginia Crapps.
Funeral services will by held at 2 p.m., Monday, April 24, 2006 at the Central Avenue Church of Christ with Mr. C. J. Moffett and Mr. John Klimko officiating. Burial will follow in the Dasher Cemetery. He will lie in state in the church for one hour prior to service time. The family will receive friends from 3:30 until 5:30 this evening at the funeral home.
