Irma Lou Sherwood

June 9, 1926 — August 30, 2016

Irma Lou (Lulu) Sherwood, 90, resident of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at her home. Born on June 9, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Gertrude Williams. Mrs. Sherwood attended Valdosta City Schools and was a graduate of Valdosta High School. She attended Georgia State Womens College, now Valdosta State University. In August of 1946, she married J.C. (Carol) Sherwood whom she had known for many years. The Sherwood's were married for 46 years prior to Mr. Sherwood's death in 1992. She was a devoted wife, mother, and a lifelong caregiver. A faithful member of First United Methodist Church, Mrs. Sherwood served as church treasurer, and was actively involved in ministering to people through the church outreach programs. She was a member of United Methodist Women for over 60 years, and was honored by their lifelong achievement award.
Survivors are a son and daughter in law, J. Carol, Jr. and Diane Sherwood of Quitman, daughter and son in law, Teresa and James M. Steinberg of Valdosta; grandsons, Trey and Leslie Sherwood, Jamy and Karen Steinberg, Burke and Missy Sherwood, Billy and Dorothy Steinberg all of Valdosta; great grandchildren, Kayleigh Steinberg, Abbie Sherwood, Will Steinberg, Jake Steinberg, Julia Sherwood, Harrison Sherwood, McConnell Sherwood, Taylor Steinberg, Jinjer Hammond, Charlesie Hammond; special friend, Jane Sherwood of Valdosta; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Penelope Ann Ethredge.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. Reverend Bob Moon and Dr. John McGowan will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The Sherwood family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to First United Methodist Church.
