Idona Thornton, 84, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014 at her home in Echols County surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Ms. Thornton was born November 15, 1929, to the late Johnny and Eunice Thornton. She was a gentle, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved quilting, sewing, and raking her yard. Ms. Thornton was a gentle soul and never found fault with anyone.
Ms. Thornton is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Linda Thornton, and Keith and Jackie Thornton, all of Echols County; daughters and sons-in-law, Dona Crosby, Edna and Donald Carter, Carolyn and Jim Harnage, all of Echols County; sisters, Clara Thornton of Echols County and Nancy Thornton of Warner Robins; sixteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, R.J. Thornton; son-in-law, Wilson Crosby; brothers, Leonard Thornton, Sr., Marcus Thornton and Isom Thornton; and a sister, Mary Simpson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Sardis Baptist Church with Rev. Edgar Wood and Rev. Ed Mullaly officiating. Burial will follow in the Carter Cemetery. Ms. Thornton will be carried to her home at 769 Sardis Church Road, Lake Park, on Monday. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at her home.
