Hugh H. Mcelvey, Jr.

October 27, 1924 — May 13, 2012

Hugh H. McElvey, Jr., 87, of Valdosta, died on Saturday, May 13, 2012 at Fellowship Home in Brooks County. Born on October 27, 1924 in Valdosta, he was the son of the late Hugh H. McElvey, Sr. and Mable Clair Pittman McElvey. Mr. McElvey served his country during World War II in the United States Army spending several months in the Aleutian Islands in the Corp of Engineers. The remaining months of his service were spent at Ft. Lewis, Washington. After the war he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant through ROTC and served in the reserve for a period of time. Mr. McElvey attended North Georgia College from 1942 until 1946 and then Mercer University. From 1948 until 1963 he was engaged in the wholesale and retail business known as McElvey-Futch Company and M & F Food Stores. He left the grocery business and worked as an accountant with Modern Homes Construction Company for 4 years. He then worked with Dr. C.O. Templeton as the comptroller for Templeton Nursing Homes until they were sold to Pruitt Corporation of Toccoa. He continued to work with Pruitt Corporation until his retirement in 1991. After he retired, he and his wife, Hilda, traveled extensively.
Mr. McElvey was a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Valdosta Lodge No. 728 where he served as Treasurer for a period of time. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 13. He was a dedicated member of the First Christian Church where he served as an Elder and also as the church financial secretary for a number of years. He was instrumental in helping form a group known as the "Senior Adventurers" in the church. This project was very special to him as he did so much enjoy working with and the association with his group of church members. He was a member of the Happy Five Singing Group and shared his love of music with the community.

Hugh was a true family man, loving his family and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family get togethers were always special; whatever the occasion, a fishing trip or the holidays, the family love was always there.
Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, Hugh H., III and Debbie McElvey of Crystal River, Florida, John C. Sr., and Trenia McElvey of Navarre, Florida; granddaughter and grand-son-in-law, Leslie Elizabeth and Jeff Conklin and great granddaughter, Darcy Elizabeth, grandson and grand-daughter-in-law, Micheil and Jessica McElvey, grandson and grand-daughter-in-law, John C., Jr. and Deborah McElvey and great grandson, JC McElvey III, grandson, Jack Cameron McElvey, several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Robert Pinkston, Sr. Mr. McElvey was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Crum McElvey.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2012, in the chapel of the mausoleum at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Reverend J. Chris Michael will officiate. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Christian Church.
