Huey Griffith Manges, 70, of Lake Park, Georgia and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, died at his home in Lake Park on Saturday, May 22, 2010. Born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on April 24, 1940, he was the son of the late Lloyd Jean and Virginia Carver Manges. Mr. Manges served in the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard. He attended Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale and continued his education by obtaining many certifications relevant to his career. Mr. Manges began his career in 1957 as co-owner with his Dad of a Phillips 66 Service Station and in 1965 he founded Manges Rentals. From 1961 until 1975 he was a Fire Fighter. In 1975 he moved up from the ranks of Fire Fighter to Chief of Port Everglades Authority. He became Director of Public Safety for the Port Everglades Authority in 1987. During this time he designed and approved the specifications for two industrial fire pumpers and assisted in the design of the currect Public Safety Building which was dedicated in honor of Mr. Manges. Upon his retirement in 1994 from Port Everglades Authority he took on the role of executive Director of the Port Everglades Clean-up Committee, Inc. and served in that capacity until 2000. He was active in many club and civic organizations including a charter membership of the Florida Fire Marshals Association, member of the Navy League of the United States, Board of Fraternal Order of the Elks Lodge 1512, Trustee, Florida Fire Chiefs Association, International Fire Chiefs Association, and a past member of the Propeller Club. Mr. Manges was a member of the Andrews United Methodist Church of Ft. Lauderdale.
Survivors are his wife, Carolyn Bennett Manges also of Lake Park; daughter, Paige Newport Keating of Ortonville, Michigan; son and daughter-in-law, George Craig and Shawana B. Newport of Villa Hills, Kentucky; grandchildren, J.Edward Keating, Caroline Keating, Scarlett Newport, Caylee Newport, Shylah Marksbery; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, LaVerne and Wade Jackson of Valdosta, special sister in law, Louise Leonetti of Lake Park, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Ernest McDonald of Valdosta, brother-in- law and sister-in-law, Norman and Robin Bennett of Hahira, sister- in-law, Helen Davis of Valdosta; and brother-in-law, John Leonetti; a number of nieces and nephews; best friends, Kenny and Bonnie Shaw of Palmcoast, Florida; and a cousin, Palmer Saylor of Apache Junction, Arizona.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, May 27, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dr. Skip Van Nus will officiate.
