Houston W. Green, of Valdosta, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at Crestwood Nursing Home. He was born December 13, 1932 in Quitman. Mr. Green was a member of Covenant Baptist Church; he was a devout Christian, a loving husband, father and Papa. Mr. Green is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Betty Jo St. John Green of Valdosta. Mr. Green met his wife after spotting her at a softball game. He convinced Miss St. John to go out on a date with him if he hit a home run when he was next at bat while playing softball for Georgia Power. He did and they married four months later.
Mr. Green is also survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law, DeDe Forte and Bobby of Valdosta, Mandy Litzke and Dave of Plain City, OH, Shelly Oehlers and Nick of Sylvania, OH; twenty-one grandchildren, Gabrielle, Madeline and Thomas Forte, Jami, Morgan, Kendal, Maria, Molly, Megan, Kiara, Joy, Sophie, Paige, Ally, Chase, Christian, Bryce, Devon and DJ, Bret and Brock Brown; one sister, Hettie Jean Spriggs of Valdosta; a special cousin, Rudine Harris of Valdosta; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rachael Nobles Green; and two sisters, Edith Murray and Doris Lloyd.
Mr. Green retired from Georgia Power after working many years as a Lineman. His family is very proud of his honorable service in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Laws DD558, and that at the age of 17, prior to his naval service, he was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers as a Pitcher. He enjoyed being with family and friends, listening to gospel music and watching baseball and football.
The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 20, 2014 followed by a Memorial Service in the chapel of the funeral home beginning at 4:00 p.m. Pastor David Cummings will officiate. Condolences may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
