Homer Lee Spells

Homer Lee Spells, 95, of Moultrie, passed away to Heaven following a brief illness on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at Magnolia Manor in Moultrie Georgia. He was born on May 5, 1919 in Lakeland, Georgia to the late William David and Stella Estelle Spells. Mr. Spells was a worthy representative of "the greatest generation" and proudly served his country in the 788th Army Battalion in Europe during WWII. Before the war and for several years afterward, he worked with the Georgia Highway Department as a certified land surveyor, and laid out roads and runways at Moody, Spence Field and Turner Air Force Bases, plus GA 133, 333, and US 82 and 84. Beginning in 1954, he worked 26 years with roads and grounds at Moody Air Force Base. He was a member of the Valdosta chapter of N.A.R.F.E., and enjoyed seeing his friends at the meetings. His family, particularly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, loved his stories about his days in the Army and his work in civil service. Mr. Spells was a member of Bemiss United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, and served in his church in several capacities as well as representing his church in the South Georgia Conference. He proved his faith by his works by being involved for many years in ministry through his local church as a visitor to shut-ins, hospitals and nursing homes.

Mr. Spells is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Dr. J. Terrell Ruis of Moultrie, and Patricia and Hilton Culpepper of Dexter, Georgia; three grandchildren and their spouses, William Gregory and Carrie Ann Ruis of Atlanta, Michelle Dianne Robertson of Warner Robins, Thomas Wayne and Meylin Robertson of Silver Springs, Maryland; a granddaughter-in-law, Amanda Ruis of Gainesville, Georgia; seven great-grandchildren, Benjamin Lee Ruis, Carrie Ruth Ruis, Jesse Ruis and Nathan Ruis, Elle Moore, Cate Moore and Xander Moore; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Louise Spells; his grandson, Mark Bryan Ruis; one brother, Mabrey Spells and a sister, Alma Beauchamp.

Services for Homer Lee Spells will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Stalvey and Rev. Dr. J. Terrell Ruis officiating. The burial will follow in the Good Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
