Hildegard Goerigk Martin

December 18, 1936 — May 19, 2014

Hildegard Goerigk Martin, 77, was born on December 18, 1936 and passed away at the
Infant Jesus Clinical Hospital May 19, 2014 in Warsaw, Poland. She was visiting her homeland that she left in 1945 after the end of WWII.

Hilde married her husband R.D. On April 16, 1959. She was a wife and homemaker. In 1996 she became involved in the American Legion Auxiliary. Her involvement was being the Veterans Administration Volunteer Representative at the VA Medical Center in Lake City, Florida. She made monthly trips delivering comfort items bought by the Auxiliary, donations from the Knights of Columbus in Valdosta, and from her own pocket. She could not do enough to support the hospitalized veterans. In the Auxiliary she served different positions in Unit 13, Valdosta, and many positions at the District level including District President for two years. She then served as the Department Chaplain, Department Historian, Department 2nd Vice President, Department 1st Vice President and then as Department President and lastly as National Executive Committee Woman. Hilde was active for many years in the local Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, Council 4913 serving as their President for a couple of years.
During her years stationed in Germany with her husband she was a Girl Scout Leader for many years. Hilde became a US citizen one day before President Kennedy was assassinated. Even then she did not regret becoming a U S citizen. Hilde is most proud of her almost 20 years of serving as a Counselor at the Georgia Girls State program held annually in Statesboro, GA. This is a program of the American Legion Auxiliary preparing High School seniors for leadership roles in the US government and what it means to be a good citizen. She looked forward to her Wednesday's Kaffeeklatsch with her German friends.

Hilde is survived by her husband of 55 years, R.D. Martin of Valdosta, son, Richard Glenn Martin (wife, Sandra Ileen) of Clarksville, TN, daughter, Sandra Faye Di Pietro (husband, Philip) of Valdosta, granddaughters, Anna-Marie Boyer of Atlanta, Brittany Webb (husband, Byron) of Bainbridge, GA, grandsons, Jeffery Martin of Las Vegas, Nevada, Nicholas Di Pietro of Valdosta, brother-in-law, W.F.
