Hilda Scruggs Brown, 88, of Valdosta, passed at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, July 9, 2020 following a lengthy illness. Hilda was born July 6, 1932 in Hahira, Georgia to the late Herbert Spencer Scruggs and Blanche Martin Scruggs. Growing up in Hahira, she graduated from Hahira High School and then attended Valdosta State College where she met and started dating Ralph Edmond Brown, Sr. Hilda and Ralph were married on December 5, 1953 and embarked on a 20 year journey with the United States Air Force. After his retirement from the USAF, Hilda and Ralph returned to Valdosta in 1972. Hilda returned to Valdosta State College and earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education in Elementary Education. Hilda spent several years teaching at Parker Mathis Elementary with the Lowndes County School System. Hilda was a member of First United Methodist Church in Valdosta, enjoyed many civic activities and loved to travel.
Hilda is predeceased in death by her husband of 63 years, Ralph Edmond Brown, Sr., her sister Mabel Scruggs; her brother Herbert Harry Scruggs; her sister in law, brother in law, and a nephew. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Ralph Edmond Brown, Jr. and Sherry Wood of Valdosta; her daughter and son in law Monica and George Waskosky of Hahira; her grandchildren Josh Wood of Valdosta, Ryan Wood of Atlanta, Kristen Waskosky of Cleveland, OH and Sasha Waskosky of Buffalo, NY. Also surviving are numerous special extended family members, nieces, nephews and cherished friends. The family is grateful for the care received by loving caregivers Doreen Davis, Reatha Williams and Tawanna Payne
The funeral for Mrs. Brown will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 13, 2020 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Rev. Bob Moon and Rev. Anthony McPhail will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. The committal will then follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
