Hilda Johncie Crum Mcelvey

Hilda Johncie Crum McElvey, 82, of Valdosta died Monday, January 4, 2010 at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born in Lakeland on January 4, 1928 to the late John Cranford and Lillian Verna Howell Crum and was a lifelong resident of this area. Mrs. McElvey attended the Valdosta Public Schools, Georgia State Women’s College and Valdosta State College. She was a member of the Phi Kappa Delta and served as its first woman president at Valdosta State University and was a charter member of Georgia Association of Gifted Education. Mrs. McElvey was a former teacher and administrator in Valdosta and Lowndes County School Systems for over thirty years. She was active for many years in the Elks Ladies Auxiliary and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. McElvey was an active member and elder of the First Christian Church. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crafts as a hobby and made many nice items that she enjoyed giving to friends. Mrs. McElvey was a very special loving person, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Hugh H. McElvey, Jr. of Valdosta, two sons and daughters in law, Hugh H., III and Deborah McElvey of Crystal River, Fla., John Charles, Sr. and Trenia McElvey of Navarre, Fla., grandchildren, Leslie and Jeff Conklin of Gainesville, Fla.., Micheil McElvey of St. Petersburg, Fla., John and Deborah McElvey of Acworth, Ga. and Jack Cameron McElvey of Woodstock, sister and brother in law, Mary C. and Robert S. Pinkston of Valdosta and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11am, Wednesday, January 6, 2010 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Michael officiating. Entombment will follow in the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens Masoleum. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
