Hilda Cothron Zipperer

Mrs. Hilda Cothron Zipperer, age 88, a life-long resident of Valdosta, passed away on December 24, 2015, at the home of her daughter in Rome, GA.

Mrs. Zipperer was born in Lowndes County, GA on June 30, 1927, daughter of the late George Mitchell Cothron and the late Alice Knight Cothron. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Stanley Ivey Zipperer; by a son, Russell Kenneth Zipperer; a great grandson, Corbin Raber Butler; by three sisters, Celia Cothron, Mary Cothron, and Sylvia Cothron Peters; and by four brothers, Ira, William, Glynn, and Donald Cothron. Mrs. Zipperer was a resident of Valdosta for 83 years prior to her moving to reside with her daughter in Rome, GA. Mrs. Zipperer was a homemaker who canned and froze fruits, vegetables, and meats for the family's consumption. She loved to bake cakes, and her children and grandchildren will always remember the huge platter filled with a large selection of cakes for holiday dinners. She was a volunteer with the Lowndes County 4-H during the time that her five children were active in 4-H activities. She devoted many hours of service to the Veterans Administration nursing home in Gainesville, Florida, where her son, Russell, resided. She raised rat terrier puppies that she sold locally and abroad. Mrs. Zipperer was an active member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Merita and Joe Humphrey of Rome and Varina and Emory Felts of Adel; two sons, Stephen Zipperer and Jan Kinsey of Valdosta and Ivey and Susan Zipperer of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Eight grandchildren, Thomas (Katie) Humphrey, Micah (Rosemary) Humphrey, Cherilyn (Tim) Selman, Jacob Felts, Justin Felts, C. J. Zipperer, Stacie (Louis) Butler, and Stanley Zipperer III, survive her. Six great grandchildren, Camden and Isabella Humphrey, Emma Rose and Easton Selman, and Dawson and Laney Butler; three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Cothron, Jackie Cothron, and Hazel Zipperer, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at McLane Funeral Home on Monday, December 28. The Rev. Roger Mays will officiate. Visitation will be held prior to the service at the funeral home from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Thomas Humphrey, Micah Humphrey, Jacob Felts, Justin Felts, Stanley Zipperer III and Camden Humphrey.
