Hilda Carroll Griffin, 95, of Valdosta, died peacefully on Monday evening, April 29, 2013 at Fellowship Home. Mrs. Griffin, a lifelong resident of this area was born January 25, 1918 in south Lowndes County to the late Thomas Beville Carroll Sr. and Effie Evelyn Wood Carroll. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Jesse Howard Griffin, her sister, Eugenia Carroll and her brother, Dr. Thomas B. Carroll, Jr.
Hilda attended grade school at the training school at Georgia State Women's College (now VSU) and then Valdosta High School, where she played basketball and cheered for the Wildcats. She then attended and graduated from Georgia State Woman's College. After teaching school in Lake Park for one year, she married her high school sweetheart, Howard and became a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed playing bridge and was an avid gardener. Hilda was a member of First United Methodist Church where she taught the 5 year old Sunday School class for over 20 years. She managed the family farm for many years and still found the time to care for her special needs sister for 30 years.
Hilda is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Virginia (Ginny) Carroll Tyson and William (Billy) Franklin Tyson, Jr. of Camilla, Nancy Evelyn Hobby and Dr. Charles Franklin Hobby, Sr. of Valdosta; one granddaughter and her spouse, Cara Elizabeth & Russell Thomas Summerlin of Camilla; three grandsons, William Franklin Tyson, III of Camilla, Joseph Griffin Hobby of Atlanta, and David Lott Hobby of Valdosta; one great-grandson, Samuel Thomas Summerlin of Camilla. Also surviving are 5 step grandchildren and their spouses, Helen & John Harden of Rincon, Charles Hobby, Jr. of Sand Diego, CA, Vicki & Don Winningham of Alexandria, VA, Dr. Tommy & Brandi Hobby of Valdosta and John Hobby of Charlottesville, VA; three nephews and their families, Dr. Thomas Beville Carroll, III of Lancaster, SC, Joseph Milledge Carroll of Tampa, and John Moorer Carroll of Hardeeville, SC; a special cousin LouNelle Carroll Heaney of Valdosta and numerous other cousins and relatives. Special thanks are offered to her loving and devoted caretakers, Latrelle Tomlin and Renee Wiseman and the dedicated and caring staff at Fellowship Home.
A graveside funeral for Mrs. Griffin will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013 at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Mr. Buddy LaHood and Dr. John McGowan will officiate. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Carson McLane Funeral Home.
